Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What can I do about my assessment?
A: Plenty!  Assessments are local processes and vary widely across the state.  The best thing you can do is go talk with your assessor.  Ask them to explain the process to you.  Ask them how they decided your property is worth the value they say it is.  Check to be sure the property is described properly and is correct.  Your assessor can make many changes on the assessment based on facts you present.

Q: OK I understand my assessment but I still think it is wrong, is there anything else I can do?
A: Yes!  You can grieve your assessment to your municipality's Board of Assessment Review.  Present your case to them each May, usually the last Tuesday in May.  Check with your assessors office to determine the exact time.  Some municipalities allow you to just mail in your request while others may require you to appear before the board.
