What Can I Do?
Make an appointment
Here's how you can make a difference right away.
Your state senators and assembly members are in their district offices - often near your home - while the legislative session is adjourned.
Now's the time to make an appointment to talk with them about property tax reform.
Tell them about your property tax burden. It need not be polished or perfect.
Ask them what they have done to support the 3-Point Package.
Ask them what they plan to do in the upcoming session:
1) Circuit breaker along the modest lines of Galef-Little for
immediate relief,
2) Tax levy cap to control future growth, and
3) Mandate relief to make the tax cap workable long term --
ALL ENACTED SIMULTANEOUSLY THIS YEAR - IN THE SENATE AND ASSEMBLY
Locate your legislator's district office, telephone and fax numbers on these web sites:
Enlist family, friends and neighbors!
Call! Write!
Second best is to call or write your representatives a personal letter.
Tell them about your double or triple tax increases over the past 10 years. Tell them how you have to decide to buy food and medications OR pay your taxes.
Describe how your neighbors have moved due to taxes, then how the property was bought at a huge increase, which increased your taxes, forcing you to consider how long you can stay.
Tell them how much your assessment increased – and thus your taxes — after you painted the exterior of your house. Or added a patio. Or repaired an out-building. Tell them how your family home was lost due to tax increases.
Consider the negative impact mounting property tax has on business and how companies have to compete at such a large tax disadvantage. Talk about the fear you have over future tax increases that will double or triple again over the next 10 years.
Demonstrate!
Show support. Plant a Property Tax Reform NOW! yard sign prominently on your property. Buy 6 and pass them around to family, friends and neighbors.
$5 each and for sale at Marbletown Town Hall, Town Clerk's office, Route 209, Stone Ridge, open Monday - Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Or call Carole, 845.687.2097, for home delivery.
Petition!
Ask neighbors, church or club members, friends and
family to sign a
tax reform petition. Then, send to your representative in Albany.
Join a property tax reform group in your area. Find one near you. Or, organize a local committee -- either ad hoc or town/city sponsored -- and send your group message to Albany. Join the citizens across the state in bombarding our legislators with demands for an equitable solution to the current property tax crisis.
